Lynx shunt vs Lynx SMART bms and what is the difference

Dear all

I checked on previous post's, but I cannot find "precise" differences between them.

What is the difference between the lynx shunt vs the Lynx SMART BMS?

If you have a side by side spec sheet, please share.

The difference from what I can understand, is that the SMART BMS is suited for Victron batteries as it has the "special" connections at the bottom for it (note : it can be operated with 3rd party batteries as well i.e. not using this special plugs..... I assume).

If memory serves me correctly the Smart BMS has a 1000 Amp relay inside that allows for disconnect if programming is done at specifics limits.

However the normal one (LYNX SHUNT)... is different ...... ???

It does not have the connections for the battery plugs? Also has a relay .....??? Also has VE can???

Can both (Lynx SHUNT & lynx SMART BMS) do pre-charging???? or is it just the SMART BMS?

I would like to install this as I am mainly after the precharge option. Yes, many installers indicate that they do not install this as they either pre-charge with a resistor or do not pre-charge at all when flicking the switch.

I would like to install something that will last for years to come and if the extra means a lynx pre-charge is safer, then I would like to do so. (unless someone has a better option if the batteries does not come with pre-charge option installed).

On a remote area, one sometimes encounter a shutdown due to ...... and hence, I would like the system to start up as safe as possible (i.e. for the capacitor's & battery BMS mosfet's)

Any info will be greatly appreciated

Simply,

The Lynx Shunt is a current measurement shunt and battery monitor which includes a system fuse on the positive side. This is for use with lead acid batteries or third party batteries where you want to have a battery monitor to measure the battery voltage and current and calculate the SOC. This does not have precharge because it does not have a contactor.

The Lynx Smart BMS comes in 500A or 1000A rating. This is a BMS for Victron Lithium Smart batteries only, it can not be used with other manufacturers batteries. It includes a shunt to measure battery voltage and current and calculate SOC and either a 500A or 1000A contactor including precharge function and management of other Victron and/or non Victron chargers and loads depending upon battery charge and temperature.

Thank you very much for the reply. Indeed, I printed the two spec sheets and placed them side by side.

However, when phoning the supplier, they indicated that the SMART BMS can be used with 3rd party batteries, one will then set the monitoring on the CERBO as SMART BMS and not the BMS in the 3rd party battery. So hence, my question on here, what is the difference.

Indeed, I think you are right with the contractor as I googled pictures of the two and it seems that the normal Lynx shunt does not have this installed.

Have a look at these 2 links, one answered by a Victron Installer and one answered by a Victron Technical staff member, both saying the Lynx Smart BMS should not be used with 3rd party batteries. Yes, you could get some functionality out of the Lynx BMS but it would not be properly coordinated with the main battery, and not having a battery connected I wonder if the contactor would close at all. Any use like this is likely to be at user risk and without any warranty.
