Cerbo GX distance from Multiplus 2 ?

For wifi coverage reasons, I'd like to locate my Cerbo about 15m away from the Multiplus. Any reason why not?

Wi-Fi is an inherently less reliable connection than a hardwired ethernet cable. It should always be a preference to connect via

ethernet when possible. Signal strength should always be at least 50%

It depends on which ports you are using on the Cerbo GX

every protocol has it's own specified distance.

  • USB 2.0 standard is specified for a maximum cable length of 5 meters
  • HDMI standard is specified for a maximum cable length of 15 meters
  • Ethernet standard is specified for a maximum cable length of 100m
  • VE.Direct is at hardware level RS232 so it is specified for a maximum cable length of 15meters
  • BMS-Can is at hardware level a NMEA 2000 500kbit/s CAN bus protocol so it is specified for a maximum cable length of 100meters
  • VE.Can is at hardware level a NMEA 2000 250bit/s CAN bus protocol so it is specified for a maximum cable length of 250meters
  • VE.Bus is at hardware level RS485 so it is specified for a maximum cable length of 15meters

Keep in mind that the specified lengths are with the right cabling. Every protocol has a different cable but can have the same connector.

For example: a rj45 cat 6 cable is internally different then a rj45 CAN cable. (CAN cable has 2 individually shielded pairs of different sections, the data wires are thin, the power wires are thicker)

Most of the communication problems on this forum are with bad cabling, so test well before hand!
