Camper van: How to use Smart BMS 12/200 with a booster?

Can you please tell me how to use the Smart BMS 12/200 with a DC booster in a modern camper van? Should the DC booster:

  1. either be inserted in between alternator/starter bat. and left input from the smart BMS for alternator/starter bat.
  2. or directly connected to the Smart Lithium battery?

Thanks

Hi Thorben,

If you mean a DC-DC charger when you say DC Booster? Then this isn't usually needed with the system you have in the image here as the CL12/200 will take care of all this and you fit the appropriate sized fuse to restrict the alternators output.

Hi mate,

yes, I am referring to a DC-DC converter.
Since the vehicle is from 2023 an "intelligent" alternator is used to meet EURO 6d Final emission rules. This means the alternator isn't active the whole time but only when starter battery voltage falls under a certain voltage level. So normally a so called DC booster (DC-DC converter) is used to draw power from the starter battery and increase it's voltage to charge additional lithium batteries.

Thanks

Hi Thorben.

The drawing you posted above is not using a DC-DC but a device called a CL12/200, this is quite different to a DC-DC charger.

With the Orion range from Victron, you'll need to use the 'key on' option to kick in the DC-DC and the alternator to start it charging as you have the new Euro 6 engine.
