I have a Victron Energy Smart 12/12 DC-DC charger combined with a Victron Energy Smart Shunt. My batteries (4x Ampere Time 100AH LifePo4's) BMS do not have a low temp cut-off. Will I be able to add a temperature sensor with my existing equipment to prevent charging during temperatures below freezing or do I need to add a Victron 712 battery monitor with a Victron temperature sensor and set it to stop charging at 32F?
The Victron Energy SmartShunt like the 712 battery monitor has an option for a temperature sensor only if you are not using it to monitor a second battery or midpoint voltage. It looks like this option is of limited value if it does not work with the BMS and smart 12/12.
The Smart 12/12 has a remote on/off circuit which needs to be controlled by a low-temperature lockout circuit from a BMS. See Figure 3 Remote on/off configuration in the Smart 12/12 manual.
Ideally, you want the smart charger to at least run the load (keeping the battery charge to zero or very low) while the battery warms up to above 5 degrees C so it does seem a Smart 12/12 mark II version is needed which works as a team player with the smart shunt and temperature sensor.
Thanks Raymiller, Is there a device you could recommend that I could wire into the remote on/off to open the switch when reaching a certain temperature? Something like this perhaps?
