High DC Ripple - 3x Multiplus 2kVA and 24V lithium battery

Good day,

I have a 3x Multiplus 24V working as threephase system with 6x lithium battery 24V in parallel and a Fronius 3kW.

Nowadays the system is showing Error 60 (Battery high ripple voltage) once a day.

The wiring from batteries to inverter is ok.

When the error occurs, the battery voltage drops ~0.5Vcc.

The system have been programmed with and without ESS assistant and PV Inverter Support.

Someone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

Usually DC ripple is caused by

  1. a high resistance point in the battery wiring (too many fuses or too many shunts, or poor quality disconnects)
  2. undersized cabling either in installation, inside the battery or between batteries
  3. charge or discharge current of battery being exceeded.
  4. intermittent bms shutdown from bad balancing (or something related to overcharging or number 3.)

See page 12 section 2.6, there is also a good checklist on page 15.

Thanks for answering.

Have you ever seen battery with bad BMS, or bad balancing problem? What battery technology (AGM, LiFePo...)?

@Allan Silva

We have personally used on our own system GEL, AGM Lead Acid and Lifepo4 and tested most battery types. Doing a bit of R&D and product testing. Currently testing a white label Chinese brand Amazing cells but let down by the links between cells (undersized), we see ripple when we work the system a bit.

With Lifepo4 it is amazing how good cells can be used and wasted by poor BMS or assembly issues, cell balancing boards etc. (cell balancing is important in Lifepo4).

With banks built from AGM and lead acid, balancing is always an issue. (and some lifepo4) Victron make a balancer for this problem specifically. There is a whole way you are supposed to install, cycle the bank physically and other maintenance you are meant to do.
