VE.Bus - what exactly is it, what can I do with it?

I'm familiar with RS485 comm buses. As such I have a Modbus-TCP to wired ethernet connector in the setup.

It looks like VE.Bus could be a proprietary CAN bus impl?

I understand if I was to go: VE-Bus->MK3USB->RPI I can get anywhere from there.

It's just that I'd prefer not having a raspberry pi in that location.

I spotted some VEBus to RS485 gadgets. What are the limitations of that interface? For example, I assume it will publish a set of registers etc. However, can I convert it back to VEBus somewhere else to use for, say, connecting the configuration VEConfigure to it?

I do this with EPEver units. RS485-Bus->ModbusTCP->SwitchedEthernet->PC->VCOM port->Software.

Also if it's "just CANBus" or "just RS485" I can save myself ÂŁ65 for an MCU based RS485 to USB converter (MK3USB).
