Protecting BP65 from overcurrent

Hi,

don’t need to protect a bp65 itself from overcurrent or can I use it as a „fuse“? Eg it sits on a rail which has an 80a fuse from the battery and down the BP im running a line which should allow the 65A. If there’s a short / overload I want the BP to shut down the line and not blow the 80A fuse upstream. Do I need a second fuse just before the BP e.g. 60A or am I good with just the main 80A fuse?

No one? At least someone from Victron should know what happens on overload....

Hi,

1.) a Battery Protect is not a fuse.

2.) you have to fuse every wire coming from, or going to the battery accordingly to protect them.

3.) a Battery Protect does have a short circuit and overcurrent protection, but this does not supersede a fuse.

4.) a Battery Protect does have a peak current rating:

5.) see manual for more information:Manual-Smart-Battery-Protect-12V-24V-65-A-100-A--220-A-EN-NL-FR-SV-DE-PT-ES-IT-TR.pdf (victronenergy.de)

@markus answer is all valid.

To do what you want to accomplish, I would add a high-quality marine circuit breaker (like BlueSea) before the BP65. It will also function as a disconnect switch.

A circuit breaker generally has some time delay involved at the trip current. So brief overcurrent events will not trip immediately, such as motor start inrush. At the same time, it should trip prior to the 80 amp fuse blowing.

Depending on the nature of the load, a 60 amp or 70 amp circuit breaker would seem to be appropriate.
