BYD LVL and old model BlueSolar VE.Can compatibility

Good day, all! We need help on this.

We have an existing system that uses Victron BlueSolar Charger MPPT 150/85 VE.Can, Victron MultiPlus 48/5000/70-50, Color Control GX and lead-acid AGM battery. We are now going to replace the battery with BYD Premium LVL 15.4.

Is this possible with the existing system? What should also be the configuration of the charge controller and the MultiPlus?

Thank you!

Sorry @Jan Brix Castillo,

This configuration with the old style Blue Solar VE.Can MPPTs (the long ones with the screen) is not supported.

That range of MPPTs was previously compatible with earlier BYD models that used allow-to-charge contacts, but the new BYD LVL models require DVCC functionality, and this is only available on the new MPPT models.

Apologies for that, but the upgrade might need to include the new model MPPT as well.

Note: the Color Control GX (CCGX) also only has a single CAN-bus interface, and this is required for the BYD LVL, so unless using a Cerbo GX, you will need to use the VE.Direct MPPTs.

Thank you, @Guy Stewart (Victron Community Manager). Much appreciated! Can you recommend what MPPT we can use to replace the old one?

Hi @Jan Brix Castillo,

Interesting timing on this one @Harry Chavez - in his recent post but opposite situation that you are in.

He needs your older style VE.Can MPPT for his older model BYD batteries (using allow-to-charge).

Would you both be interested in a trade?

Jan, you will need Harrys replacement Smart Solar 150/85 (connected via the VE.Direct port) which is not easily compatible with his current system.

If you are both willing to swap MPPTs, then this would be the EASIEST solution for you both.

Hi @Guy Stewart (Victron Community Manager) thank you for the quick response! I don't know if you have read the reply of @Harry Chavez but let me fill you in that we cannot actually trade MPPTs since his was concluded to be defective and also, the system I am working on uses two BlueSolar MPPTs and his replacement is only one SmartSolar.

Hi @Jan Brix Castillo,

So to be blunt, there is no pathway of compatibility with the older VE.Can MPPTs and the BYD LVL - they are unsupported together.

To use the BYD LVL will require moving to the SmartSolar models with VE.Direct.

Depending how many MPPTs you have, you can continue to use the same Color Control GX.

From here there are several options, as a last resort we could try and go through it, but really it would far better to talk through the rest of the design details with your Victron Dealer or Area Sales Manager.

Please try them first.

There is also further information about current MPPT options as part of the free Victron Online Training program.

If you still find after completing the online training, and talking to your regional support, you are unsure of what to do, then come back and I may be able to help further.
