48v battery bank charging question

please comment on best method to use to charge four 12v marine batteries in series with solar:
1. connect all solar to one mppt controller and charge entire battery bank at 48v.
2. connect individual solar panels to four smaller 12v mppt controllers and connect each to one of the four batteries to charge.
so i guess my question is do batteries vary enough through use over time to benefit from charging each individually even though they are in series. each battery would have its own mppt controller to maximize charge. is this practical or even benefiting the batteries longevity as opposed to charging all at 48v from a larger controller?

Hi there. Charge all of them in series from one controller, and use battery balancers to ensure they all perform and charge the same. There’s just too much that can go wrong with your other option.
