Energy meter communication protocols.

Hi Folks,

Recently looking more into energy meter communications. And noticed almost all are modbus based. Some Lan based some RS485/serial based.

Made me wonder why websockets doesnt seem as prevalent. Would allow for a more event based update processing, ie as meter updates functions are executed rather than having GX device loop queries to modbus slave meters. Or is this more desired to prevent rapid updates calling functions too quickly?

(I think the shelly driver is setup for websockets)

Some obvious reasons jump out to me being LAN may have more issues/noise on the network but there's lots of modbusTCP meters.
The next issue was maybe processing power required for setting up a websocket server on meters.

Is there anything else I'm missing/ground breaking that means it's not used. Or is it a combo of the above plus the fact modbus is more established?
