Direct connection alternator to BMS? Or controller?

Hi all,

I was always under impression that the charge input from alternator to BMS always has to be through a controller (like Orion 12/12 30A) or via external regulator.

But checking the schematics for narrowboat I see a 120A alternator wired directly into the BMS Distributor

Is this a normal practice? I'm looking to get as much output as I can from my alternator and this option seems good, I'm wrong somewhere?

I hsve checked that drawing and what you have missed is the extra 120A alternator is controlled by a Wakespeed WS500 external regulator and the WS500 integrates seamlessly with the Victron Lynx Smart BMS and Cerbo GXvia VE CAN, thus the alternator is under direct BMS control.
