Setting up MPPT 75/15 for standard lead battery

Hi,

we just installed a solar panel on our caravan using a MPPT 75/15. At the moment we connected it to a standard lead starter battery (82 Ah) we already had. I'm aware this is not the ideal battery - but while still using it, which settings do you recommend for the battery type and the load output shut off?

Thanks a lot and best regards

Florian

Hi Flomo. Your 75/15 will likely arrive 'outta the box' with suitable defaults. Say 14.4V abs and 13.8V float (plus temp compensation).

The 'load output shut off' is one of those things you may need to experiment with. No point having it set to a 'safe' level and finding some load you apply may spike V below that, when all is still fine. Usually a standing Pb held above 12.2V will give good service.

If your batt is lightly drawn on, maybe slightly lower charge V's could be used to help extend it's life.

Vague answer? Yep, because it comes with Pb territory. :)
