How is the SoC determined/measured in a Victron system?

Hello togther!I was called to an installation on a boat that is set up as follows:

1x Quattro 12/5000
1x Cerbo GX
1x SmartShunt 1000A

4x Haze HZB12-200 Ah (VRLA AGM) batteries, so total 800Ah of which effectively usable 400Ah, equals at 12V about 4.8 kWh usable.
All Victron components are interconnected.

The customer had complained that in the middle of the night the generator starts to recharge the batteries.

On the boat I did a load test and found the following:
Start values: charge 100%, 12.3V voltage 150 A discharge current. (11:45)

After 15min (12:00)
Voltage 12.25V, current at 143A 1500 Watt load.

After 25Min (12:10)
Generator starts, at Soc of 91% (voltage unfortunately not noted)

After 20 min generator runtime (12:30)
Generator stops at a SoC of 94% / voltage 13.6V

I am puzzled why the generator starts already at a SoC of 91% and stops charging again at 94%!

My question about this is:

How does the Victron system measure/assess the SoC?
Via the battery voltage or (hopefully) via the energy drawn?
Thanks to the Smartshunt and the stored battery capacity, the Victron system should know exactly how much energy was drawn!

Why does the generator already start at a SoC of 91% ?

Thanks for answers!

Best regards, Stefan

Under system setup check which device the system is using for SOC.

And then maybe share a oicture of the smart shunt settings. It could be incorrect.

Hello Alexandra

Thank you for your hints! Stupid, I didn't checked the device which is configured for measuring the SoC. It was set to "Automatic" which I now changed to "Smartshunt", see attached picture, sorry, system language is german.

As far as I can see, the settings for the smartshunt looks "ok" , see attachement.

img-5642.jpgCan you please tell me, where I can set the (lower) limit where the cerbox gx starts the generator? I would like to configure, that the generator start not before 60% SoC.

Thank you again for your help which I really appreciate!

Best regards, Stefan

Dear Victron community

I would appreciate it very, if somebody could give me an answer, how to set the limits (SoC) for starting/ charging and stopping the generator as I mentioned in my answers below!

Thank you very much for your support and help!

Best regards, Stefan
