Lithium 160ah wont restart after low voltage warning

Lithium 160ah battery shut off and can't restart it.

Tried running engine, plugging into mains, everything works when plugged into mains but doesn't when on the battery. Tried to reset using bms still nothing.


How do.i wake the battery back up?

Hi @Kieron Harrop,

what's the battery and/or cell voltages? Is it a Victron Smart Lithium with bluetooth and can you connect to the battery via bluetooth to check voltages or is the battery totally flat and bluetooth shut down?

  1. The mppt claims it's 13.5 v but I can't connect via Bluetooth so suggests it's under 8V.

The MPPT is not a real voltage measurement device for such things. You would need a digital multimeter and measure directly at the battery poles.


In the manual mentioned above there is a procedure describing the recovery after a low voltage event. But this needs to be done by a professional with the right equipment and/or under supervision. Furthermore it is much likely that the battery or one of the cells got damaged and the battery should not be used anymore for safety reasons,

It is less than 12 months old and at £1500 can't afford.to.replace it. How do.i get victron to replace it if it is faulty or where can I get it checked?

Any thing I can try to get it to rebalance or charge

As already mentioned you need a multimeter to measure the voltage directly at the battery terminals.

Then you can use a small charger to slowly charge the battery (less then 5A) under permanent supervision(!).

At some point the battery should reappear in VictronConnect and the BMS should start working again. But you should continue the slow charging until the cell balancing is done.

In the troubleshooting section of the manual is described how to recover from a very deep discharge.

After the whole procedure you have to check you installation to make sure that can't happen again.
You also must have in mind that you battery is permanently damaged, will never come back to full power and the warranty is gone.

Why doesn’t the bmv protect the battery from being discharged to problematic levels?

Seems like a notso-smart battery if it can’t look after itself.


Short-sighted considering how many diy installs there are by people with rudimentary (if that) electrical experience.

If one doesn't know how to read the manual and install the system correctly he/she shouldn't install it on it's own.


The terminals of the Victron Smart lithium batteries are always live and all loads/chargers have to be controlled by the BMS.

Loads connected directly to the battery can discharge the battery to a dangerous low level.

If installed correctly all loads are disconnected by the BMS in case of low battery/cell voltage.

Fully agree with you.

If installed correctly all loads are disconnected by the BMS in case of low battery/cell voltage.

And even then you can't leave the system unattended with a clear conscience and have to take care of it. When the battery or cell voltage is low, only a small buffer remains. The rest is then done by the self-discharge rate or a small load that was connected directly to the battery, bypassing the BMS.

Should I raise this issue with the professional company that converted the van as they must have wired it wrong.

If the battery is damaged they must be liable.

If the reason is a wiring issue then they are responsible.

But we can't say anything about that because we don't know the system. Maybe you can make some pictures.

But you also should do something about the low voltage ASAP!
