Orion TR Smart - No Output/Not Charging

I have been fighting with this Orion TR Smart for a while now (basically since i purchased it) as it has never kept the auxiliary battery charged since it was purchased and finally pulled it all out to check what's going on.

What I have found is that no matter what the app says (Bulk Charge, Float Charge or even if in Power Supply Mode), it never outputs more than around 1.7-2.1v. LED's are normal and correspond to charge modes.

  • Checked input voltage at Cable - 14.14v
  • Checked input voltage at Orion - 14.14v
  • Checked output without Battery plugged in (Charger Mode) : 1.7-2.1v
  • Checked output with Battery Plugged in (Charger Mode) : 12.1V (battery voltage, not charging)
  • Checked output without Battery plugged in (Power Supply Mode) : 1.7-2.1v
  • Checked output with Battery Plugged in (Power Supply Mode) : 12.1V (battery voltage, not charging)
  • Vehicle running for 20+ minutes. Still 0 output
  • Tried various battery/shutdown settings - same result

Anyone got any suggestions?

Sounds/looks like a defective unit to me.
Contact your local Victron dealer/the seller from whom you bought it to get a replacement.

That's what i figured.

Unfortunately, it was purchased via ebay and the dealer/seller is no longer trading thanks to the pandemic. I have emailed Victron direct to see if they can help, but I get the impression judging from their response that they are taking the position of 'Not our problem, go see your dealer'

So rock and a hard place with an expensive paperweight at the moment. I do have a Redarc I can replace it with (which in the long term is looking like the best and most reliable option), but that requires re-wiring back to the charger to account for the Redarc being a significantly higher Amp charger.

I'm having this exact same problem. My orion tr worked amazingly for 3 weeks and was so well integrated! Then one day - no more output voltage. No LED or app errors. App says the unit is operating as per its algorithm but still "--" on the output in both mode options.

All settings in respective modes are what they should be.

Tested the entire system extensively. Must be faulty!

Thanks. Your start voltage is set to 14V, but the charger is only seeing 13.9V from the alternator. Try lowering the start voltage to about 13.5V

It's also worth mentioning that every time I open the app I have to change the vehicle alternator type.

Also the green light on the unit is very dim.

Should have said this before - please measure the voltage at the output with a multimeter. There should be at least battery voltage there. If there isn't, it's a wiring fault/blown fuse somewhere on the way to the battery.
