Connecting a load to the battery while charging that exceeds the charging current.

Hello,

I have a simple setup with one 12v battery and a 4a battery charger connected while docked.

I want to have a few loads connected to the battery at all times.

What happens if the load current exceeds the charger current? E.g. My 5a pump starts while the battery is charging. Will this damage the charger?

Thanks.

You are perfectly OK doing this and it is how most boats work, the battery acts as a buffer. The pump demands 5A, the charger will input 4A, the battery will provide 1A and will discharge slightly. Once the pump stops the charger will replenish the battery.
