I have a Pallas-TG 12/50 charger and want to run gel batteries. Is this possible? If so, the charger recognizes this itself and then charges with correct characteristic curve or do I have to set something manually?

Yes you can charge the gel battery, but the charger won't recognize anything - these are 'dumb' 3 state chargers. The manual found here: https://www.victronenergy.com/old_manuals, will describe how to set the absorption and float voltages manually to match your battery.
