I haven't looked at the Pi 3 but on Pi 4 models, the touch works without any modifications or additions. All that needs to be added is an overlay and some files in /etc/venus to support dimming and blanking. The package below helps making the necessary changes:

But again, this package does nothing to make touch work.

Rpi 3B+ with original 7in touch works fine on anything I've tried over the last couple of years.

However, don't remember starting that low (2.66 I mean!) Any reason you're not installing anything more recent?

Kevin's s/w works fine and you need nothing more than that to have the screen and touch working properly.

If I were you, I'd try the latest release 2.82 or 2.83
