Gx doesn't discharge battery at night

Hi,

I'm new here, thank you for having me.
We are running a victron setup for a few weeks now. So not very experienced yet.
The setup we are using is 3 multiplus units (48/5000) for a 3 phase network (+ carlo gavazzi energy meter) and a mppt 450/100 unit as PV charger.

The problem is that the battery only discharges when the solar panels are charging the batteries.
When the battery has 74% at night, it will still have 74% the next morning.

Why doesn't it discharge in stead of using the grid?
Maybe a small setting but can't find it at the moment.

Thank you in advance!

Best regards

Hi @g320

Have you programmed the GX units yourself, or can you contact an installer??

What are you using to monitor battery state of charge, and how is it linked to the GX's?

Maybe attach a screen shot or summary of your ESS settings?

Hi Jesse,

Thank you for your reply.
We did the config ourself. In fact, we got a config file from the dealer.

The batteries are connected with VE can to the Multiplus II GX unit.

I'll try to drop a screenshot of the ESS settings.

Thank you

If I understand you correctly, you have 3 GX units in your system.

The setup we are using is 3 gx units (48/5000) for a 3 phase network

You can only have one, so what did you do with the other 2?

Do you use ESS assistant?

If YES, is your system optimized with battery life?

Is your battery charged to no less than 80% during the day?

Hi marekp,

Sorry, we have 3 multiplus units where one is the gx.
We do use the ESS assistant but the battery is charged to + 80%.
So I'll have look to the ESS.

Thank you for your reply.

I do not know if it is winter in your location, but in mine it is, and for the last 2 months there was not enough Sun to charge my battery to over 80% every day.

At the moment SOC of my battery is kept at 75% minimum because I use "battery life optimization" in my ESS assistant.

You can see it on my SOC graph from last 90 days.

What are you setting in the ESS menu of the GX device?
Also make some screenshots of the overview page of the remote console.

PowerAssist is not available with ESS.

@g320

Try turning "battery life" off and see if battery is discharged down to 20%.

Your active SOC limit is 80%.
It seems you don't have enough PV power to charge you batteries to 100% and due to "optimized with BatteryLife" the system raised the SOC limit to 80% to protect the battery.

Changed to "Optimized without Batterylife" and see if it discharges now. But looks like this will be the solution.

Thank you all in advance for the help.

Hello all,

I have the same situation and batteries are not used when mppt do not import electricity into my system. The batteries are fully charged (in south of france), so that can't be the issue...

My setup:
- Multiplus II 48/5000/70
- Smart Solar MPPT 250/60
- 3400Wp on the roof due south
- 16 x 280Ah batteries with JBD-BMS, connected to the VE.Bus port of the CerboGX

here the screenshot of my Remote Console:

as you can see, battery fully charged and power is only flowing from the grid to the AC loads.

why wont my batteries deliver the power instead of the grid ???

PS: i'm in "Optimized (with Battery Life)

grid feed in is restricted:

what am i doing wrong ???

thanks for any insight !

Check why your "BatteryLife State" is in "Sustain" mode.

4.3.8. BatteryLife state

The different BatteryLife states are:

  • Self-consumption: normal operation - discharging allowed.

  • Discharge disabled: the battery has been discharged to the actual SoC limit. (The state will return to self-consumption whenever the SoC rises 5% above the set limit).

  • Slow charge: ESS will slowly charge the battery when the SoC has been below the actual SoC limit for more than 24 hours. It will keep slow charging until the lower limit has been reached at which point the system once again switches to Discharge disabled.

  • Sustain: the Multi/Quattro has gone into sustain mode after the battery voltage has reached the dynamic cut-off voltage during discharge.

  • Recharge: ESS will recharge the battery to the minimum SoC limit if it drops more than 5% below the minimum configured SoC. Once the minimum SoC is reached the system once again switches to Discharge disabled.
