BlueSolar MPPT 75/15 VE.Direct interface outputs unintelligible garble

Hi,

I'm trying to connect to the MPPT 75/15 via RS232. According to the manual the VE.Direct interface should be outputting information in text mode. While I am getting bursts of data every second and there is definitely a structure to it, I just can't seem to make any sense of it. I can't even find a single newline or tab character, which should be present in all text mode transmit blocks.

Is there something I'm missing or could the unit simply be defective? I'm using the serial settings given in the manual:

baudrate: 19200

data bits: 8

parity: none

stop bits: 1

flow control: none,

though I've tried everything else as well.

Here is a sample of the output in hex format synced to 0x79 since it seems to divide the stream into somewhat regular looking chunks:

Hi.

You said that you are trying to communicate over RS232. The MPPT does not use RS232 levels, it uses 5V TTL levels.

The 5V is probably high enough to cross the threshold for your RS232 interface to receive a high / low, but remember that TTL signals are inverted, so a TTL low is 1 and a TTL high is 0. That'll explain the garbage.

Use a RS232 to TTL converter, like a MAX232 or something. Please don't shove RS232 (~12V to ~20V) signals up the MPPT's port otherwise it might let go.
