Ve.smart synchronised charging question

I have a mppt smart solar and a smart 12/30 battery charger in a ve. smart network with a bmv712

1. Who is the master is the synchronised charging

2. Today my mppt showed “ bulk” the battery charger showed “ storage “ AND the bmv said 98% SOC.

3. The charger wasn’t putting in any appreciable current yet the mppt controller was

4 the smart chsrger mentions it’s in synchronised charging but the mppt controller does not mention synchronised charging, correction it does when it’s detecting the charger, this relates to 5 below

5. I notice while the mppt and chsrger are only 2metres apart the mppt and the charger both seem to struggle to maintain a Ve.smart connection and seem to drop of the list and reappear frequently , no problems accessing either from the iPhone app

This whole areas is appallingly badly documented by Victron

Did you google smart networking?

Have a look here and see if this answers your question.

Hello @goboatingnow , if you read this it will explain details such as which one is the master.

Yes but these documents refer to multiple solar units not the battery charger and mppt combination I have

Hi @goboatingnow

1. When you have a SmartSolar and a Blue Smart Charger or Phoenix Smart Charger, the Smart Charger will always be the master as long as the reception is good enough (although it is not really relevant who is the master).

2. The SOC is not shared and/or used in a VE.Smart network. The fact that the SmartSolar showed bulk and the Smart Charger showed Storage might be caused by the bad reception between the two, as you mention in 5. The SmartSolar should continue the charge state of the Smart Charger, but as it does not have a Storage state, it will fall back into a Bulk / Absorption / Float cycle when it discontinues the synchronized charging (point 4) due to the bad reception.

3. Because the SmartSolar was in Bulk and the Smart Charger in Storage, the voltage setpoint of the SmartSolar would have been much higher and it would thus push the most current.

4. This can indeed be caused by the bad reception mentioned in 5.

5. Can you perhaps try to reposition the SmartSolar or the Smart Charger a bit. Rotating either one might already be enough to improve the reception.

Kind regards,

Thiemo van Engelen

There is NO MASTER, only battery voltage, battery current and battery temperature are shared. The informed decisions are made by each controller locally and they may be different.

It is like 5 people reading the same news paper, but making up their own mind afterwards, some would buy stocks, some would sell and some woud use the news paper to fire up the fire place..
