Sizing an Inverter/Charger with Generator and 12v system

Hi there.

I have a 3500W continuous output generator (230v) on my boat. I also have 3 x Bosch C20 140aH (420aH) 12V batteries. I would like to buy a battery charger and would like to maximise the battery charging to minimise the generator run time. What best size Mulitplus should I go for and why?

Thanks!

N.B. I currently have a Centaur 12/40amp charging the batteries from generator but looking to upgrade to an inverter/charger.

2C would be 84 amps so that would be your safe charging target so a 2000 compact multi plus would be about right.

If you really want to charge fast switch to lithium.

A gx device and genny auto start really transforms the system.

What does the GX do to benefit the system? Auto Start can go right from the multiplus I believe?

The Multi is able to control the generator based on load, battery voltage and state of charge. A GX device adds

  • Quiet time to prevent running generator at night (with low SOC override)
  • Manual run
  • Automated maintenance run
  • Easier to control if changes are needed on a regular basis
