Connection sequence for BMV 700

Why when installing a BMV 700 does the manual specify that the negative pole of the battery must be disconnected first and then states in bold that the negative side of the battery must be connected last? It this just for safety in installations in vehicles with a negative earth?

I saw an explanation of this, which I can't find now. Basically there is the risk of a current loop if you don't follow the procedure as outlined.
