Where's the current going?

My MPPT 100/50 says it is sending 14A to the batteries. My clamp meter confirms ~14A in the cable right at the controller. At the battery, my clamp meter shows 5.5A. Shouldn't I be seeing the same current in both places? Does this indicate a current leak somewhere? What else could cause this? Thanks for any suggestions on tracking down the cause.

Hi Bob. If you're measuring under the same V (or close) then A can't just disappear. It must be heading off to a dc load, or even a short circuit (look for generated heat).

Even kit turned off may have a standby draw, so watch for that.

You could also try measuring the A on the -ve earth return to see if you can find some sense in that part of the circuit.

But yeh, stay concerned until you find out where it's going.
