Is it possible to use another brand MPPT (such as Morningstar Tristar) in a Victron ESS System?

Good mornig. My system consists of

  • 1 x Multiplus 1600/12/70 (just bought after amy old Studer went defect)
  • 1 x Color Control
  • 1 x BMV 700
  • 2 x Tristar MPPTs TS-60 MPPT
  • OPZV 12V/440Ah

Is ist possible to set up a ESS-system with non-Victron-MPPTs?

If yes - what about the settings?

If no - is another setup possible (f.i. with "virtual switch")?

Thanks a lot! Michael

Hi @drmi

Yes this is possible, but you won't see solar production on the Color Control, and in VRM.

What you do is set the solar regulators to a higher voltage than the Multi, and select 'feed-in excess solar power' in the ESS settings.

As soon as the charge voltage set in the Multi is reached, the system will start feed-in to the grid.

Is there anyway to see the production in the Color Control. VRM, etc?

For example, many MPPT options, such as Midnite solar, offer CAN BUS.

Alternatively: A shunt could be installed on the output of the MPPT to track production. Is there any way to feed this data into Venus GX / VRM?

Thank you for your replay.

May I ask further?

Are the following values correct:

Tristar TS60-MPPT: 14,4 V Absorption, 13,5 V Float Voltage

Multiplus: 14,1 V Absorption, 13,2 V Float

Best regards Michael
