Is it better to have shorter cables before or after a orion tr smart unit

It depends if it is a step up or step down model.
Have the thicker shorter cables on the low Voltage side.
If it is the same Voltage at both sides then the shorter cables before the unit would be marginally better, but probably not make a huge difference.

I would put the shorter cables between the charger and the battery since it allows the charger to more accurately measure the battery voltage.

Thicker cables on the input is best especially if you have a long run, say from the alternator to the the back of the RV or van as thiner cables although may carry the current may cause a voltage drop to the Orion inputs to cause the unit not to sense if you are using auto detect. But that is a balancing act cost, Orion has a 16mm2 terminal long run of 16mm2 could be expensive and difficult to run. Used compromise 10mm2 x 3m works well
