help understanding Orion TR Smart DC DC charger

I am looking to purchase a 12/12 / 30A Orion DC to DC smart charger however i cannot find any information as to the differences between the "isolated" and "non isolated" what ar the differences and where / when would i need one rather than the other?

The non-isolated models have the negative in and out terminals interconnected.
Isolated models are designed so that the negative in and out are separate. This is useful if the ground systems between which the DC-DC converter is connected are different.
