Using Phoenix 1+1 smart charger to tricle charge a starter which also has the Orion-Tr DC to DC convertor connected.

I am configuring a setup where a Victron Orion-Tr Smart Dc/Dc charger is used in auto detect mode to charge from the alternator with the charger in parallel to the starter battery and a Victron Phoenix 1+1 is used to tricle charge the starter battery when charging the house battery from mains.

Questions:

  • Will the trickle charge from the Phoenix activate the detection circuit of the Orion and hence also try to load the house battery.
  • If so, can I use/program the NC/NO relais on the Phoenix to disconnect L-H on the Orion when the Phoenix is (trickle) charging? Can this relais cope with prolonged use or is it perhaps bistable?
  • Is there perhaps a best practice in this case?

The easiest way should be to feed the ignition lock signal (15) into Remote-H of the Orion-Tr.

Would it be an issue if the engine would be running and thus charging with both the trickle charger and generator charging? Would it cause issues with the DC-DC charger in that situation?

Couple of comments.

Engine plus Phoenix is ok.

Getting the Orion to work might need some other settings changed. As supplied it won't charge until it's input is high. Trickle charger will probably be below this threshold. So you need to look at the input vtage settings, probably disable engine detection and make sure you don't end up flattening your starter if you forget to plug in the Phoenix. As said, removing the LH bridge and having a switched positive from the ignition is a good way.
