Multimeter usage and Benefits

I'm designing a 12vdc and 48vdc automotive system(s), the 48vdc inverts to 240vac. I'm not planning to install myself, but I may have to fault find and repair when I'm a long, long way from the nearest town. You know, 4x4 expeditions in the outback...

My question is - what benefit will having a multimeter in my tool kit give me?

I don't mean to sound completely dumb, just a little. I know it's really important but I'm unable to describe the usage and the benefits. I would really enjoy hearing everyone's comments, I'm sure this is a topic that can really bring out expertise that everyone can benefit from.

Thank you

It's out of scope for this forum. But get one, preferably with a built in clamp ammeter
