White page in Classic UI after update from v3.55 to v3.60?

Hello all of you,

I Update last week to 3.60 on GX from 3.55.

  1. In 3.55 I have the classic UI, now in 3.60 is a blank frame and key not working more in classic. Is this normal in 3.60?

  2. New UI , as you see I have AC-Load and DC-Load, all okay and looking normal. But in VRM is not show the same. Not show DC-Load and AC-Load is blank and is show same critical Load Not understand this.

  3. Solar (mppt) in VRM show it and add to battery, okay. But PV Inverter (extern, no Victron) (AC output is measurement from Victron VM-3P75CT set as PV inverter output ) is add to Solar input . ??? Can see it in VRM graph. In VRM PV Inverter is show the output(W) go to critical Load , not to battery or other. In GX is add to Solar yield. ( mppt + PV inverter ) Not understand too.

in 3.55 all show up normal.

FYI
It’s important before you update to 3.60 to update SetupHelper and/or other installed packages.
I had an old version of TailScaleGX installed on my CerboGX and that caused a white screen in GUI-v1
I suggest to downgrade to 3.55 and update the packages (using Gui-v1) and after that install 3.60 again. An update using the CLI is also possible. For more information look here: GitHub - kwindrem/SetupHelper: Helper functions to simplify writing setup scripts that modify VenusOs functionality. The package includes automatic reinstallation of the package after a VenusOs update.

If you don’t know what I am talking about you can ignore this message

Hello,

Is show up after update to 3.60 , but is not show the correct graph , only Plus value, minus then discharge battery, not show)

Hi
I have the same problem. Classic UI looks just like yours. Nothing except the frame while open in a web browser while on the GX device the screen is blank.
I thought that by now Victron would have noticed the problem with V3.60 and addressed it with a firmware update. Makes me wonder how many people are using the Classic UI.

Dear all,

10 out of 10 times, seeing a white screen after updating Venus OS is due to third party modifications being installed, like GuiMods, Tailscale GX or others, and them being out of date. And because of being out of date, they are not compatible with the installed version of Venus OS.

This is not Victron’s fault or something that Victron can easily prevent. And not perse the fault of the modifications either. Its just something that requires extra attention by the user when having third party modifications, mods for short, installed .

Its visible as a white screen on the real display, like on a Color Control GX, and on GX Touch and Ekrano GX. And you’ll also see it when opening the Classic Remote Console on VRM.

Note that only the Classic UI is affected, not the New UI. To lean what Classic UI and New UI are, read here.

To solve this, those mods need to be either updated or disabled/removed.

How to confirm that this is the issue

Open the New UI in a web browser, and check the new Settings - General → Modification checks page:

Step by step:

  1. Access the New UI

On VRM, click Remote Console and then choose the New UI.

Local to the system, on a phone, tablet or computer on the same LAN or WiFi network, try either of these links:

  2. Goto Settings → General → Modification checks

You’ll see a page that looks like in above slide.

Anything in red indicates that your GX is running more than original Victron software.

How to resolve option A: update the modifications

Below instructions explain how to boot back into the previous firmware version, under the assumption that it all worked well before doing the update. And then in there update them; many mods are updatable using a handy Package manager. And then re-update to the latest version.

Step by step:

  1. Restore the previous version:

Go to Settings → General → Firmware.

  2. Update the mods

Many modifications use a package called “Setup helper”. Its a menu entry, and it allows to update the mods without having to use a USB stick and such

Find that in the UI, update everything. And once completed:

  3. Update back to v3.60

Go to Settings → Firmware → Online updates.

And update again. Don’t boot back into the backup of v3.60. It needs to be installed again.

Note that any version number that has a ~ in its name is a beta version. For most systems that is not wanted, so select Official release in that menu firsr:

How to resolve option B: disable the modifications

One solution is to update the modification. How that can be done depends on the modification, please refer to their instructions.

The other solution is to disable the modification, and then apply the update again to restore it to its original.

Step by step:

  1. First disable the “All modifications enabled” setting using the slider on the page.

  2. Next, click the button that allows to reinstall the update.

Note that this also disables Node-RED and SignalK. There is currently no option to only disable the installed third party mods.

But that is coming soon, the new modifications check page has already proven to be super useful, and we’ll soon release a few improvements that makes it easier to use.

Hey @ankloss has your white screen issue been resolved in the mean time?

Do you mind re-asking the other two questions (if not resolved) in a new topic?

Then we can use one as the main one for people running into the white screen issue in Classic UI

Hi Matthijs
Thanks for your information.
I have reinstall/reset my Cergo GX with new firmware so it is completely fresh with no mods at all.

I can now use both new and classic UI.

I only need to make one modification and that is adding support for my JK-BMS. I hope this will not upset the Cerbo GX.

Hi @SolarInstaller , see Venus OS: Root Access [Victron Energy]

Thanks to Victron for providing a way to recover from white screen issues.

The All Modifications enabled option simply moves /data/rc.local out of the way so it doesn’t run at boot. However, this does NOT remove modifications that change the Classic UI pages, modify code in /opt/victronenergy or install services.

If you reboot at this point, any modifications made to the file system will still be in place and added services like PackageManager will still be running.

As instructed above, you must reinstall the latest firmware to remove all the modifications in order to restore the system to it’s stock state.

i´m also stuck - was so stupid doing an update

now i also have the white screen - browser says to many redirects
(System running on a Rasperry)

yes, there was setuphelper on the system

system still works , i see it in VRM-Portal, but also there i can´t access Console

  • I cant neither open GUI V1 nor V2 locally
  • no SSH Access as my password was as usual resetet during the upgrade

the only chance i see now is to take out the SD-Card . change
/opt/victronenergy/swupdate-scripts/set-version.sh 2

to have back the old version - or a complete reinstall

Any other proposals?
