VRM users: owner vs admin

Hi,

We are about to install our Victron solar system, and I am trying to clarify some details about VRM setup. I came across this passage in the VRM manual:

“If you are the first user to add this installation to an account, you will automatically have Admin Control rights for this installation. Any subsequent users who try and add the same VRM Portal ID will need to get approval of the site owner. This approval email is automatically sent when they try and add the site to their user account.
Subsequent users will also be added with Technician, or User (read-only) access permissions. However, the Admin can assign Admin, or Technician control rights to other users via the Settings → Users page for that installation.”
(Source: 2. Getting started with VRM )

I would like to confirm if the following statements are correct:

  • The account that first registers the GX device (Cerbo GX MK2) is always the system owner?
  • The owner cannot be removed, even by other admins?
  • If the installer registers under their account, they become the owner?
  • The installer can invite us as an Administrator / Full Access user, but even as an admin with broad control, we would not be able to change the owner’s permissions? (for example, if we later change the monitoring company and want to revoke access from the previous installer)

Or would it be safe to let the installer do the setup under their VRM account and then have them invite us as Admin and later demote them to Technician? Or should the GX device be registered under our VRM account from the start to ensure full ownership and control?

Finally, just to confirm — the VRM installation will be added through the Cerbo GX MK2, correct?

We want to make sure we don’t lose access to our system and that we retain full control.

Thank you very much for your help!
Alina

Whilst it is possible to change the identity of the owner after registration, this is not a simple process.

In your scenario, it would be better to do the registration yourself, and then invite the monitoring company of your choice. That way you retain full control.

Initial registration is quite simple.

Owner = Admin
As far as I know there is no special status as “owner”.
Every admin can add or remove other admins.

As the one who pays for the system you should be an admin and everyone else should be “technician” or read-only user.

IMO it’s ok that the installer registers the system first to configure it but he should invite you as an admin after the installation is finished.
(That’s how we do it)

Thanks Matthias!

I saw the 3 types of VRM users + all the access each has, in this article: 2. Getting started with VRM

but it also mentions “owner“ in “Any subsequent users who try and add the same VRM Portal ID will need to get approval of the site owner.“, so just wanted to be sure ownership is with us if we ever change installer, not to loose access to our system.

We’ll let then the installer fully install and configure out system, and after we’ll request to be added as Admin and we’ll change them to Technician.

As a Technician user the installer will continue to have all the access they need, or can this in someway backfire on us in terms of support etc ?

Could you please confirm that VRM installations are not per VRM account,

if the initial installer user can be fully removed from the VRM installation it did, while other VRM accounts can continue as admins of that VRM installation.

Thank you very much for your help!!

Hi Mike,

Where exactly does the “identity of the owner“ appear and why it’s not simple to change after the first VRM registration of the installation?

Could you please send a screenshot or an URL to read more about this?

Thanks!

There is no “owner”-status, only the three in you screenshot.
IMO “owner” is just the wrong word in that context.

The one who bought the system owns it and should be an admin, for you installer it should be enough to have technician access.
As you see in you screenshot a technician can do almost everything an admin can do.

One VRM account can have multiple installations (we have over 1000 in our account) and also multiple VRM accounts can be connected to one installation (with multiple admins, technicians, and read-only users).
