Venus OS V3.60~66 bug WS500 field drive

The Wakespeed WS500 field drive is no longer reported correctly. Sometimes, when ignition is turned on it shows 100% and then goes to 0% once the engine is running. I am not sure what version of V3.60 this disappeared at. I did think that one of the earlier versions had changes to report field drive and utilisation correctly. Graph below is with alternator running at 30-40% field and 60-80A output.

When I go back on VRM to my data from March when I was running V3.54 or V3.55 I have data for the field drive. I am not at the boat currently so I can not test back to V3.55.

Hi @pwfarnell thanks - we’ll look into this

Still reporting zero field drive on ~79.

Hi, yes - sorry for not getting back to you earlier. This will be fixed in a WS firmware update

(i don’t know when).

Mainly out of curiosity: is there a list of alternators known to work (well) with the WS500?
I’ve never worked on boats or RVs so this is uncharted territory for me.

My main reason for asking is the “Field” wire between the WS500 and the alternator, so naturally I conclude that at least an alternator with external field control is required.
Sorry to steal this topic for my curiosity.

See wakespeed website?

Couldn’t find anything there, was the first place I looked :frowning:
Maybe I wasn’t looking close enough.

I’ve never looked into this topic in detail

Some alternators have a field wire, but in the majority of cases you have to open the alternator, break the internal link between the internal regulator and at least one of the brushes and then add a new field wire and possibly a new positive or negative wire.
