I am an inland boater on the UK canal and river network and have carried out a lot of DIY work on my previous boat. My current boat is a new build with complete Victron power system so I have less scope for DIY but I did replace the original AGM battery bank with Victron Lithium NG batteries, Lynx NG BMS and Wakespeed WS500 alternator controller. I am a retired Chemical Engineer by profession so although not having an electrical background, current flow in wires follows many of the same principles as fluid flow in pipes.
