Under Vehicle Mounting

Hi all,

I have just bought:

  • Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated 12/12-30
  • SmartSolar MPPT 75/15
  • SmartShunt 500A

I’m struggling to find somewhere to mount them that doesnt greatly impact the areas i use for storing other camping items (im very limited on space).

So i’m wondering if i can mount these on the underside of the floor of my vehicle (Toyota Landcruiser). I know they are not rated for this, so they would be mounted in a strong sealed steel enclosure.
Would the lack of ventilation be a problem for them staying cool?

Any other advice would also be appreciated.

Thanks

If you can guarantee that the components are within their IP specification, than this should work. All of these components are passive cooled, so they have no real air exchange, but still they will heat up this enclosure and it might happen, that the power will be limited in some point. A temperature sensor could make sense, just to know how warm it is in the box. The components will limit their power in case the temperature is too high, so no worry about a over temperature scenario.

They may be passively cooled as noted above, but they have heatsinks on the back and expect to be able to generate a convective cooling air flow over the heatsinks so if you have them mounted horizontally they will not cool as efficiently as the correct vertical mounting and if enclosed there is no doubt they will get hot and derate the output current or stop charging.
