Is it OK to mount the Victron Orion sideways? The manual does does mount upright. I have found the perfect spot with lots of circulation, but it means a sideways mount.
Please let me know if this is OK, or if it 100% has to be upright. Thank you. Ian
Theres like 30 different Orion models available, which one are we talking about?
If it has no cooling fins then it doesnt matter.
Generally units with cooling fins on the back should be mounted with the fins upright, so that convection can help cooling. You can however mount them anyway you like, theres no moving parts or fluid in them, but it can lead to a power derate due to high temperature.
(IP rating might be different if not mounted upright, if thats a concern)
I appreciate the response. I have attached an image of my Orion XS. No cooling fins on back (4 small feet in corners so that back has airflow). I will keep an eye on the output to see if there is any derate, and check to see how hot it is getting (if at all). Ian
Hi @Lunatic, I have the exact same model as this mounted upside down in my bakkie. These units are much better and more efficient than the older models with cooling fins, although as you said you do have good ventilation already so that is a bonus. I will add though, if you are mounting it on a wooden board, use some stand offs, at least 10mm, as the back can get quite hot, also possibly paint the area directly behind with some heat resistant paint just as a precaution.
More good advice. I will check the clearance. On this model, there are the 4 short feet on the bottom, which does give some ventilation to the back. Have you noticed any overheating issues with the upside down mounting that have caused a reduction in performance and AMPS output reduction?
That will help a lot yes. No not at all, have been able to pump 50A constantly while driving for at least an hour when my auxiliary battery is really flat, but I normally set it down to 20A to not strain my alternator too much in the long run.
