Orion Smart 12-12 30 totally powers off

Having troubles getting my battery to charge. Please help.

I have a 12-12 30 charging an 100ah lithium leisure battery.

Unfortunately I didnt realise I had an issue until it was too late and drained the battery totally flat. Now the battery wont charge and any time the charger kicks in it totally shuts down, like full power off. It dissappears from the connect app and a few minutes later turns back on, goes to start charging and then powers off again.

Used 6awg cabling on everything as recommended, and there is a 60amp breaker between the van battery and the victron. All negatives go into a bus bar which is connected to the van body.

I cant seem to find anyone else that says their unit totally switches off, so im a little stumped. My 3 ideas for the issue are as follows :

  1. The breaker is one of the cheap ones you find on amazon. When the voltage is getting higher it cuts off and restricts the power to the victron.
  2. The victron is protecting itself from something. Its very warm here so could be heat cut off? Or its totally knackered.
  3. The battery is done. Dont know enough about batteries, but it would be the only thing left.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive had to cut a trip short while i sort the issue, so the quicker i get it done the quicker i can get back on the road.

Thanks

Check the little bridge wire between the remote terminals is still securely screwed into the block and the terminal block is pushed into the Orion.

As your lithium is discharged that might be shut down. I assume it is not a Victron lithium check the manufacturers recovery instructions.

Check your input wiring for tightness, do you have a multimeter to confirm it is OK. As a test connects the input and output on the breaker together.

Ive tried those with no joy. Also changed the breaker and thats not solved anythinh either.

Have just seen ‘#120 internal error’ come up though. Which i cant seem to find a explanation for either. Starting to worry its unit now.

Unluckily, I think you are correct. Error 120 is not listed in the Orion 30 manual but is in the Orion XS 50 manual.

Error 120 - Internal supply voltage error

  • The unit performs internal diagnostics when activating its internal voltage supplies. This error indicates that something is wrong with an internal supply voltage.
  • This error will not auto-reset. Check the installation and restart the unit using the power-switch. If the error persists, the unit is probably faulty.

Could you explain to me how to use the multimeter to test? I know how to test the batteries, but not the connections. Would be appreciated.

Put the negative test lead on battery negative the move the positive test lead along the wiring from battery positive to mppt positive battery connection, touching at each connection on equipment, wire and crimp. Each voltage should be the same. Then put the positive test lead on battery positive and move the negative test lead along the negative wire from end to end.
