NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

Plus the application version is now showing as v1.1.10 in debug&develop settings

There are two versions.

  1. Android App version
  • You can check its version in the service menu of the app: press and hold the bottom-left corner of the display for 5 seconds.
  1. GX GUI version
  • This is the interface you’re seeing inside the Android app, but it isn’t part of the app itself. Instead, the app simply fetches the GUI directly from your GX device (Cerbo, Ekrano or ColorControl GX).
  • Whenever you update the firmware on your GX device, the app will automatically load the new GUI, no app update is required.

Hello. I have updated to version 1.00. Unfortunately I still get the same error that when I only have one Pi powered in my network everything works flawlessly but as soon as I plug in Pi number two the display starts losing connection to the chosen Pi eventually stopping in the white screen with the reload button.

During my testing I tried disconnecting the main Pi from WiFi and connecting it with Ethernet. I then switched the app to connect to that IP. That didn’t help. But when I switched back to WiFi the screen automatically found the Pi even though I didn’t tell it to switch IP to connect to which was a surprise to me. It doesn’t seem to stick to the chosen IP and it does some kind of search that apparently doesn’t work when there’s two Raspberry Pi with Venus OS on the same network.

Thank you again for this development, I hope you can get it to work with my setup.

I installed it on an old android tablet and it works perfectly. First install the latest firmware on the Multiplus. I see that my SMA inverters have no voltage and current.

It may be realated but neither does the fronius on gui v2.

Hi everyone,

As many of you have probably noticed, Android GX Display has been officially launched.

Thank you all for your feedback, it’s been tremendously valuable in getting us to this point.

A few issues are still open and will be addressed in upcoming releases.

Is there a list of tablets confirmed to work with the app? I lost overview in the thread.

I installed v.1.00 right after release. But it still runs into Reload/Restart screen once a day. After last restart a message was coming up: “Beim Parsen des Pakets ist ein Fehler aufgetreten.” (“An error occurred while parsing the package”). But it comes back to work after confirming this message.

Up and running on a new (cheap) Packard Bell Monza T5 7-Inch tablet running Android 13 (installed from QR). :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The tablet is set to switch off the display after 2 minutes of inactivity in Android settings.
This works, but it seems the only way to wake the tablet again is by pressing the power button.
Double tap on the screen does not work. :frowning:

I guess this is a limitation of the device (did not test this before the device was factory reset).
The only related setting I found in gxDisplay is to keep the screen on, but perhaps I missed something??

3 posts were split to a new topic: Can you fully power down the Android tablet remote screen?

Most of time (but not always) I get “Transport Connection Error” when waking the device by power button or when returning from the settings menu.
gxDisplay does connect and return to normal working after a second or two though.

likely because the unit goes to sleep, and so does the network connection.

does the Release-Version also has an option to be installed via APK and not QR method?
I did not see a link provided in the announcement

Yes, it is the same limk. https://ve3.nl/gxDisplay

You can also find it in the manual, first link in the video description.

Just tried a factory reset again and the QR method which still doesn’t work with v1.00

Tablet is a cheap brand from Amazon : C11 running Aumi OS 2.5 (BigdroidOS 3.0.1.011800) Android 14

Venus Beta v3.60~71

APK install does work though.

Is this an OS limit that Victron can’t get around?

Maybe it’s useful for future searches to put the link in the first post on this thread?

The QR method installation depends on the tablet, needs to be properly supported otherwise it will fail. Which error do you get?

The manual APK installation should work on any relatively new Android device. What is the error you get?

I get through to ‘Getting ready for work setup’ and then I get the error ‘Can’t set up device’ photo of the display message in post #315 - I forgot looking at that older post, that the QR method worked for beta4 but hasn’t since for me, and that was around the time I got an Ekrano, I do run mods and I get multiple reboots at the moment, I’ll try another factory reset, maybe that is relevant.

Hi,

Use to have 2 Samsung TAB A tablet with Android 7.7.1.

One running in kiosq mode the other in application mode.

After some learning with Updates and auto-updates, I can report that both devices are working OK.

(still have the auto-rotate feature not correct when the usb device is on the left side in my case)

With next update I will try to be more carefull in the process used as with the application mode one I need to download it on a Pendrive then manually update the device. But If I remember correctly the update to Version 1 was better (Downloaded directly in the device and ran the update).

Thank for your job, this app is really usefull !!

Xabi.
