NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

Thanks for the feedback.
Which phone/tablet model are you using?

It’s a Samsung Galaxy Tab A10 with Android 11. My Cerbo GX runs with Venus OS Large v.3.55 with a fixed IP Address.

Lan IP configuration is automatic but ip never changes, also have a GX lte plugged into my Cerbo as a backup with a fixed public ip address SIM card!.
Cerbo is running…….v3.55

I am trying to set this up on an old Nexus 7 (2013) running LineageOS 18.1 (custom ROM with Android 11).
After scanning the QR code, Wifi connection is successful (has internet access & connectivity to my GX).
Then I get:
ā€œThis device belongs to your organizationā€, clicking Next gives:
ā€œGetting ready for work setupā€¦ā€ with a spinning icon, which spins for several minutes before giving:
ā€œLet’s set up your work device; View Termsā€ clicking Accept & continue" gives:
ā€œTo set up this device it needs to be encrypted first. This may take some time.ā€
I have not attempted to Encrypt; Don’t think this is intended or desired.

I will try via APK & Fully Kiosk next, but am just wondering if anybody has had success setting up a Nexus 7 via QR code?

APK downloaded from https://bit.ly/gxDisplay & installed (Beta9).
GX is on Firmware v3.53
Initial app config behaves normally, but connection to the GX is never established; only black screen with Victron Energy & logo, displaying Loading…
Eventually: ā€œAn unexpected error has occurredā€ with option to Reload or Restart.
Reload gives the same behaviour.
Restart closes the app, but it does not load again.
Tried to uninstall and re-install gxDisplay, but no change.
What is strange is that browsing to the IP of the GX does not connect either (tried stock browser and Firefox). Using Firefox on Windows 10 PC on the same network works fine.
Browsing to other local devices with web interface works fine on the Nexus.
Ping to the GX IP from the Nexus is also successful.
Starting to look like gxDisplay is not going to work on the Nexus 7 :frowning:

Any suggestions?

Sorry I can’t help with your old Nexus - I also have one, but it was awful originally so not used in years, it might just not be up to it.

If you want to try though you don’t need to use the APK if you’re going to use FullyKiosk. I have a few years old Kindle Fire HD running FullyKiosk just pointed to the IP of the Ekrano, it’s solid, works better than the APK running on a new cheapo amazon tablet running Android 14. (It’s more stable - I don’t have to reload most days or get random blank screens which I do with Android tablet on beta6)

I’ve been waiting to update a mod and test both the latest Venus beta and Tablet beta9 when I have time to fiddle and see if the QR code method will finally work for the cheapo tablet.

Update:
The display was running almost for two days. This morning it was in the Reload/Restart screen again. A Restart brings it back to work.

Thank you for your response @Al-2.0

Unfortunately I agree that the Nexus is not going to work. :frowning:
Even running curl to the IP of the GX from a terminal on the Nexus does not return any response.

Since neither the APK or browser worked, I did not even try Fully.
Just out of interest, are you running a browser on Fully pointed to the IP address?

Hi there how do you get into this hidden menu please?

Press and hold for 5 seconds the bottom left corner of the screen.

Thank you buddy I’ve pulled that hidden menu up before. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out how. I’ve since found a topic on the app which explained it. :+1:

Working on an Honor Pad x8a (running MagicOS 8.0, which is based on Android 14) with no problems encountered at all. Fantastic. Thanks very much.

Hi Everyone,

Version 1.00beta10 has been released.

  • Improve crash recovery mechanism
  • Various small improvements

Starting from beta 5, if the app is installed via the QR method, you can update it by pressing the ā€˜Check for updates’ button in the service menu.

Hi, v1.00beta10 includes improvements that should reduce the chance of getting the Reload/Restart screen.

On the FireHD I am still running Fully Kiosk Browser v1.57.1-play

So the browser is built in. I haven’t tried the beta on that tablet yet.

Thanks for hint. I just installed Beta10 with builtin Check Update/Download/Install. It worked smoothly. Now I have Beta10 running. I’ll keep watching it and report.

I’m having an issue with the time being off one hour but the ccgx time is correct.

Maybe pulling time from the local device? But there is no way to edit the time zone or just turn off the time display on the screen.

Did a reset went into the device and had it update time did a factory reset and then reloaded and all is fine now but it would be nice to just turn the time off on the display

You can access the Android settings from the service menu (hold left bottom corner for 5 seconds). From Android settings you can adjust the time.

Huawei Y6, model MRD-LX1, Android 9 with gxDisplay Beta8 installed via apk.
Version 1.00beta8 showed option to check for updates in Service menu.
Just used it to check, download and install beta10 successfully.
So the ā€˜Check for Updates’ button and ā€˜Auto update check’ on/off switch are also available in installs via the apk.

Great app, thank you for this.

Download button apk works a treat
