NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

This is the remote console from the asus ui. Seems to work ok. So, what to do next to make this beta work?
Edit: not remote console, but vrm.

Just checked it. Both (Tablet and Smartphone) have SD Card slots but they are empty.

I installed it with the apk file now.
It works fine on both devices.

I showed it to other family members who are not familar with electronics. They liked it but asked if the battery is charging or discharging. It was not clear indicated for them.
This brought me back to the question I asked earlier why it is not possible to select for the brief page that you want to display W instead of V and A for the battery? In ESS environment power in W is easier to understand as grid, pv and loads are displayed in W, too.

Hi,

I bought one of the earlier in the thread listed Amazon.com cheap nonname tablets. It turns out that the tablet defaults to a US timezone and I’m in Sweden (GMT+1). This means that the clock on the middle top of the screen shows 9 hours wrong (or something similar).

@jperez Please enable access to time zone settings in the tablet so that the timezone is changable OR make it a settings option to display the time from the GX Device instead onscreen.

Hi Kaj,
have You tried long-pressing in the bottom left corner and trick around to see if You get to Android Settings that way?

Would it be possible to have a button sequence to restart the Home App / Launcher (This display software)?

I still have this problem where if I let the pad sit for a few hours it’s unable to show anything but a black screen. I have to reboot the pad in order to get the display working again. When it works it’s gorgeuos, thank You @jperez for this software!!

When you get the black screen, have you tried to press the ā€œReloadā€ button in the service menu?

We are working on a solution to detect these scenarios which sometimes are not caused by the app itself but duo to an Android bug and then act on it.

I have same problem but even reboot doesn’t work most of the time. Turning tablet off for fee minutes and then back on usually works.

Sometimes it takes few hours for black screen to appear but it has worked for few days without issues.

Yes, I tried that. Search for devices → Connect doesn’t help either. A simple method of being to kill itself would be nice, at least in a beta version. Say long press bottom right corner → restart app. Since it’s the home screen app I can’t kill it from settings → apps either. Reboot is the only option. Meanwhile the gui v2 has been open and alive on several other computers and my phone.

How do I upgrade the software when that day hopefully arrives? I’m really glad You’re working on this, this device matches my use case much better than a wired display. Thanks.

I’ve tried to do that. Managed to get that trick to work on a Galaxy tab, but this noname tab doesnt have that luxury of way to cheat the system.

I can report that this does not work in a Huawei Mediapad T3 7.0 (android 6). Downloading the APK and starting it just causes an immediate crash.

Very excited about this feature and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+.
I am currently on the Official Release FW v. 3.52.
The Introduction says " Venus OS: Your GX must be running firmware version 3.50, which is currently in beta."
This might be a dumb question, but as this is a beta feature, do I have to go back to the Beta FW feed to use the dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display or is it in the official 3.5X release?

3.52 will be fine on the Cerbo side. It should probably read ā€œat least version 3.50ā€.

Installed and working on a Huawei P30 running Android 9.

Runs quite warm with the display on full time. It would be good if the display settings could be accessed to turn down the brightness.

Great app! Thanks to the developers :+1:

Edit: Answered my own question - Should have tried harder… !

Tap on the ā€˜Display Settings’ banner above the keep screen on and show battery status toggles, and you get into the phone display settings as normal

App regularly crashes after about 5-6 days uptime. Galaxy Tab A9+

Hello,

Since the last Venus firmware update (from the 3.60~9 till ~11) the tablet lose the connection with the Venus Gx quite often. Venus GX Reboot solve the trouble somehow !
The 3.52 was better, really better. (I’m connected directly to Venux Access point )

I’ve notices that the option ā€œKeep on Screenā€ do not remain active after a while or a restart.

Are we still with the V1.00 Beta 4 ? no new release ?

is this ongoing development, or a one-off PoC?

This works really nice on a Nokia T10 8" tablet with Android 14. Just running the APK, able to escape out if necessary. I have no doubt it would work fine as the home app as well.

Since this pad is able to run navionics and show enough depth curves to be usable I won’t probably be using this app as the home app but rather keep this a a Venus wireless display with the added possibility of being a backup Navionics seachart pad.

Even though the Nokia T10 doesn’t have double tap wake as an option, it does work. I can just double tap the screen to wake it up, and it wakes every time (often doing the reload).

Still looking to maybe getting my Lenovo M7 as mentioned earlier working, since it’s perfect for this use and has enough capabilities to run as a Venus display but really not much more. Someone else had the same problem with the same tablet so maybe we would be able to find the issue together?

I’m also curious if the V1.00 Beta 4 is the newest release, and where would newer versions be released? If they are, how do we upgrade?

edit: i’d rather actually have the app polished a bit to work better as just a normal app. Albeit with the powers to manage the screen and be on top if needed.

I’m with you on this, make it a standalone app, with permissions for overlay and pinning etc.
This should work well.

I run this exact way on my PoC radio terminals, and it works just fine.

This is not a proof of concept (PoC); it is actively under development. Currently, it is in the beta phase. We are working on various improvements that need to be completed before we can proceed with an official release.

Updating: At the moment, updating requires resetting the device and going through the installation process again. The next beta version, or the one following it, will include an optional auto-update feature.

The primary goal of this software is to transform an Android device into a dedicated GX display. In the future, we may explore the possibility of making it a standalone app, but this is not a priority at the moment.

:+1:Installed the app on a $40 ONN 7" tablet running Android 14 I picked up at Walmart. I was considering a larger tablet but the 7" is actually an optimal size. I also added an app to keep the screen from timing out…Nice to be able to quickly glance at the screen vs opening app on another devise.
