trying to link the inverter to the VRM account, but when i go into the install page there is no option for an inverter.
Please describe your system…
If you Don’t have a venus / Gx device - e.g. Cerbo, then your inverter has no path to connect to VRM.

we have an inverter and a charge controller. How do i know if they are GX devices? Do we need to get a MPPT controller?
The GX device is a control monitoring solution. The most common are the Ceebo GX and the Ekrano GX, but there are quite a few ither options.
You can explore the range here.
Sometimes it is built into the inverter sometimes it is a separate device.
The manual getting started with the VRM shows how to connect to the VRM.
