IP65 update failed and this website

I have more than 10 Victron IP65 smart chargers in use. I bought the 1st one 9 or 10 years ago, and have bought more when I needed them. They have always worked fine and I check them once in a while to keep the firmware up to date.

Last week I wanted to use a spare 12|5 and when I connected it wanted to update, so I tried updating it but it stopped at 5% and now no longer works. In another thread that is marked as “solved” the person in a similar situation (his was 1 day old) was advised to get it replaced by tne dealer as it was a hardware error.

Today I tried updating a 24|8 and you guessed it, exactly the same problem.

There was nothing wrong with these chargers until I tried to update them. Is the quality we have come to expect from Victron a thing of the past?

I have no idea when or where I bought these chargers and am sure as hell I won’t be trying to update the other 10 or so I have connected to cars and wheelchairs anytime soon, until Victron can tell us what is going on.

I am forced to type this on a mobile phone, because this new community will not allow me to work from a Windows 7 PC (browsers Firefox ESR, Chrome, Brave, Opera One and quite a few others are no longer supported).

What is happening to Victron?

A few questions:

  1. How can I get my chargers working again and if replacement really is necessary, does Victron cover this under warranty for chargers that may be out of warranty?
  2. Who do I contact for replacement? Most were bought on ebay from what I assume were authorised resellers.
  3. Can you please change this community to work on older browsers. Interestingly, the discourse home page works fine on my Win7 browsers, as does the main Victron site!

I had heart failure when updating my older one.

Press and hold the mode button for 10 seconds. Then try again. It recovered and i updated successfully the second time i tried.

All should have a distributor they are supported by. Use the official channels.

Thanks for the tip. I have been able to recover the 12|5 and update it, and it is charging a battery

I tried the same trick with the 24|8, and was able to reset it. I tried updating it again but it stopped at 5% as before. Reset it again, tried to update 3 more times and gave up. I think I will leave it at the older firmware level for now.

I had the charger on my lap and phone in my hand during the attempts, so there was no distance issue with bluetooth. The phone is a recent Samsung S24, so you would expect it to be ok.

I’ll try updating again using my tablet when I have time. For now, it works

Thanks again

I’m happy it now works. But why do you have to update it if it’s working? Victron recommends not to update if everything is running as you expect or unless you really need the new features.

When I connect to it, it comes with a message that it wants to update. So, I followed the advice from the Victron Connect app.
