ESS Assistant Not Detected Despite ESS Present in VEConfigure

Hello,

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction because I’ve spent several days trying to resolve this.

Equipment

  • Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50
  • Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/45
  • Cerbo GX MK2
  • Pylontech US5000 battery
  • 4 × JA Solar panels (2S2P configuration)
  • VE.Can Type A to Pylontech CAN cable installed
  • Cerbo GX connected to home network and VRM

Current Status

Everything appears to be working correctly:

  • Solar charging works.
  • Inverter works.
  • House runs from battery when grid is disconnected.
  • Cerbo GX communicates with the Pylontech.
  • Battery SOC is displayed correctly.
  • Pylontech battery appears in the Cerbo Device List.
  • MultiPlus and MPPT show External Control.

The only remaining issue is ESS.

Problem

The Cerbo GX reports:

“No ESS Assistant found”

under the ESS menu.

What I’ve Already Done

Using Remote VEConfigure via VRM:

  1. Downloaded the current configuration.
  2. Opened it in VEConfigure 3.
  3. Confirmed that the ESS Assistant is present in the Assistants tab.
  4. Saved the configuration as “settings7”.
  5. Uploaded the configuration back to the MultiPlus via the Remote VEConfigure tunnel.
  6. Upload completed successfully without errors.

However, after the upload:

  • Cerbo GX still reports “No ESS Assistant found”.
  • ESS menus remain unavailable.

Questions

  1. Is there a way to verify what configuration is actually stored inside the MultiPlus after an upload?
  2. Can Remote VEConfigure report a successful upload while the MultiPlus is still running an older configuration?
  3. Is there a known issue where ESS appears in VEConfigure but Venus OS/Cerbo does not detect it?
  4. Is there a specific procedure required after uploading ESS (reboot MultiPlus, reboot Cerbo, power cycle, etc.)?
  5. What is the best way to confirm that the ESS Assistant has genuinely been written into the inverter?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Additional Information

  • MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50
  • Cerbo GX MK2
  • SmartSolar MPPT 150/45
  • Pylontech US5000
  • Pylontech detected on Cerbo via VE.Can.
  • Battery SOC displayed correctly.
  • MultiPlus and MPPT show External Control.
  • ESS menu on Cerbo reports “No ESS Assistant found”.
  • Configuration edited using VEConfigure 3 via Remote VEConfigure tunnel through VRM.
  • ESS Assistant is visible in the VEConfigure Assistants tab before upload.
  • Upload completes without error.
  • After upload, ESS is still not detected.
  • System otherwise operates normally from solar, battery and grid.

One further question

Could this be caused by a mismatch between:

  • the configuration file downloaded from the Remote VEConfigure tunnel,
  • the file being edited locally,
  • and the file actually uploaded back to the MultiPlus?

If so, what is the correct method to verify the configuration currently stored in the inverter?

“The system originally operated without ESS. Pylontech CAN communications and Cerbo integration were added later. Since then the battery is recognised correctly, but ESS has never appeared despite multiple uploads containing the ESS Assistant.”

That is an awfully long post. Very AI. Not a fan.
I skipped most of it.
Updated all your firmware? What versions are you on?

Did you use the basic guide?

Did you configure the assistant after adding it?
