Dedicated Install Smartshunt IP65 500A - Can I cut off and seal/insulate the VE Direct Cable?

I have a dedicated install in a very limited space and don’t want extra wire flopping about. I will never have a second battery or use for a GX device. The Aux cable is easy. Can I cut the VE direct cable near the unit and cap it off? Or are there cross connects in the plug I need to be concerned about?

Thanks

You should be able to just cut it. VE.direct is an RS232 protocol which does not need any components in the plug.

But be careful to either insulate the cut wire ends individually, or cut them staggered, in order to avoid them creating shorts between each other. Also only cut the cable while the shunt is powered down, theres 5V and GND on it coming from the shunt.

Thanks for the quick response. Unit still on bench so no power. I’ll stagger, heat shrink and liquid electrical tape.
