I’m installing a BMV 712 on my boat. I want to use it to monitor both the main battery bank and the starter battery. The guide is pretty straightforward there’s just one thing missing. Where do I connect the loads&charger (L&C) cable for the starter battery?
I have to connect the L&C for the main battery and the negative of the Starter battery to the L&C side of the shunt. Does the L&C of the starter also connect to the L&C side of the shunt. So 3 different connections? Would’t this bypass the shunt for the Starter battery? And shouldn’t the L&C of the main and the starter stay seperate?
I don’t understand why this is not mentioned in the manual
The starrer loads and connections negative goes to the starter battery negative. However, the starter battery negative also needs to be connected to the load side of the shunt. The cpnnectoon can also be made through a chassis / hull ground if both batteries are connected to this. Any chassis / hull ground goes to the load side of the shunt.
Thanks! So there’s no need to seperate starter and main negatives? What you’re describing is pretty much the same as having 3 connections on the load side of the shunt right?
Thank you so much. Still not sure how the shunt is supposed to measure any current for the second battery, if everything is connected to one side of the shunt (accept for the small positive wire). But at least I know how to install it.
Only really need voltage from the second battery anyway. It’s only used for starting the engine.
The shunt measures voltage and current for the main battery and only voltage for the starter battery, that is why you need to keep the starter loads and the starter battery negative together on one side of the shunt. When setting it up in the Victron Connect app do not forget to set the aux measurement to starter battery.
