Replacing House AGM's to Lithium, keeping AGM starter - how to wire in a BMV712 Smart?

,

Hello All, Noobie here…..

Removing AGM house bank, freedom 25 invertor and link 2000 monitor, and installing 2 x lithium 165 Ah, Xantrex 2000 XC Pro, BMV712 Smart monitor and shunt, along with an Orion DC-DC Charger. I am ‘de=powering’ the existing shunt and will be using it as a negative bus bar, coupling the battery only side of it to the load side of the Victron Shunt.

My question is where do I connect the starter AGM negative to as I want to use the aux input on the shunt to monitor AGM battery voltage with no interruption to the house bank monitoring,

Thanks in advance, and go easy…I’m new to this….

Welcome Neil,

Do I understand correctly that you want to monitor the starting battery voltage with the shunt of the BMV-712?

If that is correct you just need to connect the included red, fused wire from the positive of the starting battery(or anywhere nearby that has the starting batteries voltage) to the second(B2) terminal on the shunt. Starting battery is already chassis grounded and so will the shunt be. This is your ground. No additional grounding required.

Remember you can only monitor the starting batteries voltage with the BMV not the amps and state of charge like the house batteries.

Also, if you don’t mind me asking, why go with a Xantrex 2000? The Multiplus is a far superior unit and around the same price. It will also integrate much nicer with your other Victron equipment.

Hello TherealKT, you understood my question perfectly, and thank you for your response, it’s greatly appreciated. I had thought this would be the case, but wanted to consult a more experienced person in such matters. Using the old shunt as a negative bus bar made we wonder about the starting current being wrongly included in the house battery bank management, which it isn’t and is great news for me.

I chose the Xantrex because its continuous duty is 2,000 W whereas the Victron Multiplus is 1,600 W. I have the ability to manage the output current/wattage to suit our needs if we want to. My Freedom 25 is rated at 2,500 W on 2/0 cable, but we have never used it at that output and so didn’t need to go to the 3,000W Victron Multiplus

Thanks again for your swift and insightful response

Neil
