Do I need to protect the smartsolar from lightning strikes?

I see some people have circuit breakers installed between the panel and the mppt. Is that what I need or is this unnecessary?

This depends on the set up, how big is the array? There are fused breakers you can buy and surge arrestors as well. Are there lightning rods on your home or nearby? What are local laws for solar installation.

Look up pv combiner boxes for an idea of what people use.

For the most part of you are grid tied in a place with overhead power lines, you are more likely to have a strike through those.

If this is permanent installation, you should have over voltage and over current protections.

Over current protection is done by fuse or breaker.

Over voltage by:

or something similar.

I that case, you do not need surge protector because your car is isolated from the ground.
