is a Battery Protect necessary for the solar power in?

Is it necessary to have a battery protect inline for the positive voltage coming in from a solar setup?

I'm using a MPPT 30a Victron controller.

Between MPPT and battery? No. You must have over-current protection on the (+) wire, either fuse or breaker, 1.25X wire rating.
