VictronConnect setting files, or how useless they are

I do like to keep an archive of current and past device settings, not limited to Victron. So over the years ive got quite the collection of files from various programs, all kinds of devices and installation stages.

Most of them can still be opened and read, and even applied to a new device.

However, the VictronConnect settings files are pretty much useless. They only work with the exact VC version that they were saved with. Once your app updated, you’re done, not useable anymore.

I can understand that app or device update makes a settings file unusable, that settings can be added or disappear through firmware updates and that because of this, a settings file can no longer be used on that specific device.

But i cant even open it in the app without uploading to a device, or export to some human readable format. Or, at the very very least, see with which app version the file was created, to then hunt for that version.

It would be very nice to have at least something available to read settings files that were created with an older VC version.

Apparently this was supposed to be added with v6.33 which was released about a week prior to my rant, sorry about that

v6.33 (Released officially)

2026-05-27

Changes

  • Make it possible to inspect a settings file created with a different product firmware version.

However, it does not seem to work with v6.34 or v6.40beta8.

So i thought, maybe that only works if the file was created with v6.33 or newer. So i saved a file on v6.34 and tried to open it in v6.40beta8, still get the same error

If i follow the instructions of the error message and connect to an Orion XS in this case, then i only get the option to import settings from file. But thats not really what i want, i would like to only read the file, not just write whatever settings it contains to the device i just connected to.

I asked the developer and got feedback.

Importing an old file into a real device should always work.
Just opening a file can give errors.

Victron will add a change in the next 6.40 beta so it should be possible to open all files that have been created with VC 6.30 or later.
Files created with older VC versions will not work.

Can confirm, v6.40beta9 solves this. Well even more than that. The config file not only contains config data, but it looks like also trend data

Good stuff
