Victron MPPT 250/100 not charging batteries

I have a SmartSolar HQ1901D1AL1 running on a 48V system which has decided to stop charging. With the PV disconnected I am at 176V, once connected the PV input drops to zero. Victron Connect indicates low PV input, 0V.

I’ve connected the MPPT to a 12V and tried to do a reset with no success.

Any ideas?

The MPPT has a mechanism with a PV input relay for protection that keep the input shorted.
Some conditions may have trigger it and a procedure must be performed.
Not to mention that some old versions have a problem with the firmware and that relay remains closed. Your’s a 2019 I see.
Try to update the firmware to the latest, because since late 2022 the firmware tried to address this, especially for 250/100 model.

I updated the firmware, unplugged the solar and battery.

plugged in a 12V battery.

Then connected to VictronConnect and followed the instructions… MPPT Solar Charger PV Short Relay Reset [Victron Energy]

But I do not see the Reset Relay Option

The client is 2 hours from me, had I been intelligent I would have brought the MPPT back to my workshop.

Now I realized something… Sorry.

SmartSolar VE.Can MPPT 250/100 - Pv Short Relay introduced per Serial number HQ2150 and newer.

Yours is HQ1901… So 2 years before introducing the Pv Short Relay.

So, I’m afraid that something else could be the problem… Probably some other type of hardware issue…

Hello,
Have you solved the problem of your mppt 250/100.
I have the same symptoms (short-circuited PV input) on a model prior to Serial number HQ2150 and newer with error code 39 and 86.
a priori the short-circuit relay exists on the old models but there is no reset procedure accessible to the customer.

thank you for your answers

I have the same problem, serial number HQ2507HNPRE.

0 V on both PV and battery terminals. Battery is functioning through Victron Multiplus ii inverter and takes charge from it, but not from the panels. It is brand new. Worked fine for just three days then died.

Did this problem get resolved please?

Update: I followed the link above. It is a bit misleading because it states this reset only works for serial numbers much higher than mine. But in desperation I tried what they say and it worked. So, to save you ploughing through lots of information I will describe what I did and the problems I encountered:

I recommend you read this in conjunction with the actual link above in case I miss anything out.

  1. Ignore the serial numbers.

  2. Disconnect the PV array. I have 200 volts on a good day so I had fitted a suitable DC breaker that I turned off instead of physically removing the leads.

  3. Disconnect the battery leads. I don’t like disconnecting the leads while the battery is running so I turned the battery off first then disconnected just the negative lead.

  4. It says to connect a separate 12v power supply to the solar controller battery terminals. I was nervous because my sytem is 48V so I wasn’t sure if this instruction was only for 12 v systems, but I decided to chance it. Luckily I do have a mains powered 12V bench power supply with suitable connectors to fit into the solar controller terminals. But, since I am off grid, I had to turn my battery back on and let it run through the victron inverter to get my bench power supply running.

  5. I held the 12 V leads to the MPPT and heard a click, good, they said I might hear a click.

  6. The Victron Connect app fired up on bluetooth and showed a reading of 12 V. this is promising!

  7. In the app you click the settings icon and then the three dots in top right corner, then select “product info” and from there you see “relay reset” just as described in the aforementioned link. It gives a warning about voltage but since I knew I was on 12V I was able to ignore that, I clicked the “Reset” button and it went back to a previous page without giving a confirmation, so I clicked it again and same thing, no confirmation.

  8. Disconnect the 12 v supply, reconnect all terminals, and turn the PV back on from its breaker,

AND IT WORKED!!!

Thanks to the other posts and keep up the good work guys!
