Why we even doing this, this isn’t one of those forums let’s get back to constructive technical disagreements/solutions. OP has resolved the issue, I am one of those that likes to update but backup is king and always advice able to have one before an update.
When I see an update I normally end up with Mr Google to see what the update contains before I do but my system is a lot more simplistic just having one multi you guys run some of the most complex systems so one hiccup can knock the whole thing sideways, so I get why Victron stance is not to update when working and the versatility of Victron is the downfall there are too many ways to build a system to your own spec to know how things are going to behave with every update but that’s just my opinion. Let’s be civil
Again: the changelogs MUST bei shown in the VRM dialog from which the user clicks a button to install the updates.
Is this so difficult to understand?
You are right! Im ending my input on this OT discussion
Victron’s philosophy is that it is a system meant to be installed and maintained by professionals. That is how the information is structured, anyone who registers to that free site can not only access software and docs, but training as well.
Anyone who follows the information provided, via manuals etc should understand what is or isn’t required.
The update buttons used to be red, this was changed to make it more obvious that it is informational.
If you take the time to read the vrm documentation, particularly the update procedure you will find this in the beginning:
it is not required to keep your Victron equipment updated to the latest firmware version. Stable systems should be left with their current firmware. Firmware updates should only be done when it is recommended to fix an issue you are experiencing, or add a new feature that is required by the installation.
There was a todo item to make release notes accessible from VRM, but that is somewhere in the works. And in the meanwhile the log is not hidden, it is just kept in the same location as all the other relevant firmware information for which anyone can register. That might not suit you, but it is the way it is and has not been an insurmountable obstacle for anyone.
For the most part, few end users opt to read manuals, release notes even less.
When a problem happens, it is always avoidable if someone just took the time to properly prepare.
Sign up to the blog/news on the pro site, new releases are announced as are its contents. Doesn’t get much easier than that.
Victron is free to do that. But this doesn’t mean that it is OK that “Victron Experts” publish fake news about the access of users to changelogs of updates.
Let’s face it:
- it is not true that everybody has access to changelogs. One needs to register and log in as a “professional”.
- it is not true that changelogs are accessible directly from the site from which updates are installed and are available for download.
- it is not true that access to changelogs is easy to find. The site from which users install or download updates doesn’t give any information about changelogs and how a user can get access.
But it is true that every user has access to updates. When “Victron Experts” claim that users better don’t install updates without having information what the update does change, then this is advice of unprofessional non-experts!
Victron sells it’s stuff to non-professionals and it grants non-professionals access to it’s this forum. I think it is time that Victron accepts the reality.
VRM is not the only way to update victron devices, but theres also no mention of release notes in the VictronConnect manual. Also VictronConnect will encourage you to update
If an update is available but is not mandatory, you will be able to see your product’s overview page, but you won’t be able to change any settings and the Settings page will prompt you to update the product
However in the VE.Bus for VictronConnect there its again discouraged to update
Its also interesting that their policy about not updating things unless you experience issues or want new features contradicts that auto-updates are enabled in cerbos (and possibly other GX devices) by default
I agree that theres some ambiguity on if updates are a thing you regularly install without thinking much about it, or if its some task you might want to think about and read up on first
